UN Climate Change Conference, 7-18 December 2009, Copenhagen, Denmark
The Kyoto Protocol to prevent climate changes and global warming runs out in 2012. To keep the process on the line there is an urgent need for a new climate protocol. At the conference in Copenhagen 2009 the parties of the UNFCCC meet for the last time on government level before the climate agreement needs to be renewed. Therefore, the Climate Conference in Copenhagen is essential for world climate, while the Danish government and UNFCCC want to make the meeting in Copenhagen a success, ending up with a Copenhagen Protocol to prevent global warming and climate change. The Climate Conference will take place in the Bella Center from 8-17 December 2009. Governmental representatives from 170 countries are expected to be in Copenhagen in the days of the conference accompanied by other governmental representatives, NGO's, journalists and others. Is climate change killing life in the Mediterranean Sea?
Global warming may be linked to increasing mass deaths of marine life in the Mediterranean Sea. By analysing past temperature changes and simulating climate change effects on a type of coral, a new Spanish study indicates that climate change may indeed be to blame. The paper is entitled 'Global warming-enhanced stratification and mass mortality events in the Mediterranean', by Rafel Coma et al., and is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 106 (15): 6176-6181. A new tool to improve the reliability of climate models
Reconstructing past climates in order to better understand the present and predict the future is the main goal of the MARGO project, whose results have just been published in Nature Geoscience. To achieve this goal, an international collaboration including French researchers reconstructed ocean surface temperatures during the last glacial maximum, which took place around 20,000 years ago, with unprecedented reliability and precision. Thanks to this unique set of data, the researchers identified weaknesses in the climate models used by the IPCC. MARGO is therefore a valuable tool that can be used to perfect such models and better predict future climate change. To see the full story, please follow http://www.alphagalileo.org

No oxygen in Eastern Mediterranean bottom-water
Research from Utrecht University shows that there is an organic-rich bed of sediment in the floor of the Eastern Mediterranean. This bed formed over a period of about 4000 years under oxygen-free bottom-water conditions. A wet climatic period was responsible for the phenomenon. According to climate scenarios, the climate may become wetter in this area, potentially giving rise again to a period of oxygen-free bottom-water. These results are published in the September issue of Nature Geoscience. If you want to read more on this story please visit http://www.alphagalileo.org

Explosion in marine biodiversity explained by climate change
A global change in climate could explain the explosion in marine biodiversity that took place 460 million years ago. Researchers have found evidence of a progressive ocean cooling of about 15 degrees Celsius over a period of 40 million years during the Ordovician geologic period, which until now, had been associated with a 'super greenhouse effect' on our planet. The results from this study were published in the journal Science on 25 July 2008. If you would like to read more on this story, please see http://www.alphagalileo.org

Snapshot of past climate reveals no ice in Antarctica millions of years ago
A snapshot of New Zealand's climate 40 million years ago reveals a greenhouse Earth, with warmer seas and little or no ice in Antarctica, according to research published this week in the journal Geology. The study suggests that Antarctica at that time was yet to develop extensive ice sheets. Back then, New Zealand was closer to Antarctica but the researchers found that the water temperature was 23-25 degrees Celsius at the sea surface and 11-13 degrees at the bottom. Acidification of the sea hampers reproduction of marine species- decreasing pH the biggest threat to marine animal life
By absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and from the human use of fossil fuels, the world's seas function as a giant buffer for the Earth’s life support system. The chemical balance of the sea has long been regarded as immovable. Today, researchers know that the pH of the sea's surface water has gone down by about 25 percent, just since the beginning of industrialisation, only over a century ago. Researchers at the University of Gothenburg, along with colleagues in Australia, have studied how this acidification process affects marine animal life and the results are alarming.

Thaw of Arctic ice could lead to irreversible changes in the climate
A thaw of Arctic permafrost is a 'wild card' that could stoke global warming by releasing vast frozen stores of greenhouse gases, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) said on Wednesday. 'The balance of evidence suggests that Arctic feedbacks that amplify warming, globally and regionally, will dominate during the next 50 to 100 years,' it said. Sea level rise may reach 20-80 cms by 2100
A recent Reuters poll of 10 leading climatologists about likely rises in world sea levels this century was carried out. Six of the 10 experts stuck to projections by the UN Climate Panel that sea levels will rise by between about 20 and 80 cms by 2100. Four said gains could be higher because of likely bigger thawing of Antarctica and Greenland. None thought the IPCC was exaggerating the risks. UN breakthrough in Bali launches historic climate talks
Nearly 200 nations agreed at U.N.-led talks in Bali on Saturday to launch negotiations on a new pact to fight global warming after a reversal by the United States allowed a historic breakthrough.
The Bali meeting approved a 'roadmap' for two years of talks to adopt a new treaty to succeed Kyoto beyond 2009, widening it to the United States and developing nations such as China and India. Under the deal, a successor pact will be agreed at a meeting in Copenhagen in late 2009.
The accord marks a step towards slowing global warming that the U.N. climate panel says is caused by human activities led by burning fossil fuels that produce carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas.
Scientists say rising temperatures could cause seas to rise sharply, glaciers to melt, storms and droughts to become more intense and mass migration of climate refugees. To read more on this story, please visit http://unfccc.int/meetings/cop_13/items/4049.php

Past decade the warmest ever, says UN Meteorological Agency
The decade of 1998-2007 is the warmest on record, according to data sources obtained by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The global mean surface temperature for 2007 is currently estimated at 0.41°C/0.74°F above the 1961-1990 annual average of 14.00°C/57.20°F. Other remarkable global climatic events recorded so far in 2007 include record-low Arctic sea ice extent, which led to first recorded opening of the Canadian Northwest Passage; the relatively small Antarctic Ozone Hole; development of La Niña in the central and eastern Equatorial Pacific; and devastating floods, drought and storms in many places around the world.
