EGU General Assembly, 2-7 May 2010, Vienna, Austria
The EGU General Assembly 2010 will bring together geoscientists from all over the world into one meeting covering all disciplines of the Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences. The EGU acts as a forum where young scientists in particular, can present their work and discuss their ideas with experts in all fields of geosciences. A session of interest to SESAME is the 'Ocean Margin Processes' one, convened by Prof. G. Shapiro. The purpose of this session is to share recent findings in the study of exchange processes between shelf seas and the open ocean. Rising ocean temperatures near worst-case predictions
The ocean is warming about 50 per cent faster than reported two years ago, according to an update of the latest climate science. A report compiling research presented at a science congress in Copenhagen in March says recent observations are near the worst-case predictions of the 2007 report by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. To read more of this article please see http://www.theage.com. Additionally, the synthesis report from the climate congress in Copenhagen can be found at http://climatecongress.ku.dk

The White Paper: Plans to prepare Europe for climate change
Recent research suggests that climate change will strike harder and faster than originally thought, and while developing countries may be the hardest hit, Europe will not escape unscathed. Thus, the European commission is now proposing that EU member countries start to think about how to adapt to climate change.
The European Commission recently presented a policy paper known as the White Paper which presents the framework for adaptation measures and policies to reduce the European Union's vulnerability to the impacts of climate change. The proposal recommends studies to increase understanding of climate change. It also calls for strategies to manage resources better, an assessment of the costs and benefits of adapting to climate change and reliable tools to monitor how the changing environment affects health. To read or download the White Paper please see http://ec.europa.eu

Impacts of Europe's changing climate: 2008 indicator-based assessment report
This report, published in September 2009, presents past and projected climate change and impacts in Europe by means of about 40 indicators and identifies sectors and regions most vulnerable with a high need for adaptation. The report covers the several indicator categories, including atmosphere and climate, cryosphere, marine biodiversity and ecosystems, water quantity and freshwater qualit among others. The report also shows the need for adaptation actions at EU, national and regional level. The report is a joint effort of the European Environment Agency (EEA), the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC-IES) and the World Health Organisation Europe (WHO). CIESM Atlas of Exotic Macrophytes in the Mediterranean
The Mediterranean Sea harbours the largest number of introduced macrophytes in the world: marine botanists at work in the CIESM Exotic Task Force have drawn a list of 110 taxa which they consider as recent introductions (recent in the sense of post-opening of the Suez Canal (1869); the Indo-Pacific is the main donor region of exotic macrophytes) to the Mediterranean Sea. The distribution maps of these 110 species of exotic algae and marine plants are now available online via http://www.ciesm.org
