Economic versus ecological networks - integrating economy and ecology in scenario building for marine ecosystems: an advanced course in economic and ecological modeling drawing on the theory of networks economics. The course will take place at CRH, Sete, France, and it is organised by EUR-OCEANS and IRD.
The teaching team (confirmed speakers) includes: Christian Mullon (IRD, France; coordinator); Brian Fath (Towson U., USA); Pierre Fréon (IRD, France); Ferenc Jordan (Microsoft Research / Univ. Trento, Italy); Gorka Merino (PML, UK). The application deadline is 20 October 2009 (application reception order will be a secondary selection criteria). 4th General Assembly Meeting, Villefranche, France

The 4th General Assembly Meeting will from 9-10 November in Villefranche. The first day will be devoted to presentations of the WP progress and deviations - issues of concern by WP leaders. The morning of 10th November will be devoted to administrative issues and approval of the next implementation plan, while the Advisory Board Meeting will be held on the same afternoon. SESAME Stakeholder Forum, HCMR, Athens, Greece

The first local SESAME Stakeholder Forum: 'Mediterranean and Black Sea: Science and Socio-Economic Management' will take place on 21 October 2009, at the HCMR premises, in Athens, Greece. Representatives from the political, environmental and economic fields, the tourism industry as well as NGOs will follow the presentations given by selected SESAME scientists and then participate in an open, round-table discussion about policies and ways to improve and apply marine protection action plans. WP2 Intercalibration Workshop

A WP2 intercalibration workshop is being organised from 2-3 July 2009 in Athens, Greece, at the HCMR premises. The workshop will be divided into 2 sections: the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. For each section, working groups on physics, chemistry and biology will be organised and the results of the discussion in each group will be reflected in the protocols (summaries). WP7 Meeting

WP7 is organizing its 5th internal meeting on 3 April 2009 in the premises of HCMR, Athens. The objective of the meeting is to take stock of research activities during the first two years of SESAME and plan for the next year. A central topic is the state of integration with scientific modellers and the ability of WP7 researchers to streamline and speed up their research. Outreach activities and publication strategies will also be
discussed.

1st SESAME Scientific Workshop, Palma de Mallorca, Spain

The 1st SESAME scientific workshop will take place back-to-back with the General Assembly meeting in Palma de Mallorca. It will be in plenary and will be divided into the following five integrated sessions: 1. Assessment of past changes across the SES; 2. Current status of the SES; 3. Manifestation of environmental impact on SES ecosystem-the case of fisheries/jellyfish; 4. Identification of changes Drivers and Pressures of environmental changes; 5. Methodological approaches towards forecasting the future of the SES.
A session will be devoted to all SESAME Phd students who are obliged to participate and present their work with an oral presentation and poster.

WP5 Meeting, Palma de Mallorca

Mesozooplankton Taxonomy Intercalibration Workshop, HCMR, Greece

Joint WP4, 5, 6 and 7 Meeting, Rome, Italy

The WP4, 5, 6, and 7 joint meeting will take place in Rome on 13-14 May 2008. The meeting will be held at the CNR headquarters, Piazzale Aldo Moro 7, in the 'aula Conferenze' meeting room. The aim is to coordinate research with the WPs that provide input in setting up the valuation exercises, the GTAP modeling and the scenarios. This meeting, between modellers (WP4, WP5 and WP6) and socio-economists (WP7) will focus towards establishing a common working framework.

WP5 Meeting

Scope: The first WP5 meeting to discuss new models of meso-zooplankton based on functional types and size, trophic transfers in the Black Sea and modelling cases of invasive species occurence in the Mediterranean and Black seas. Another objective of the meeting is to make progress on the generation of generic functional groups valid for the Mediterranean and Black Seas for the following groups: anchovies, copepods, appendicularia and invasive species.

EU Scientific Press Briefing, Barcelona, Spain

SESAME has been selected to take part in the European press briefing organized by the Commission on 2 - 3 October 2009 in Barcelona, Spain. European journalists are going to be invited to take part in an event which will highlight some of the best projects in the field of marine biodiversity, corals/plankton and climate change. As a special highlight, the briefings will be held on board the research ship Tara(http://oceans.taraexpeditions.org; associated with the Damocles project). Tara will be touring the Mediterranean and anchoring in the port of Barcelona. Dr Javier Ruiz from CSIC will represent SESAME.
