Training Programme on Regional Ocean Governance for Mediterranean and Eastern European Countries: Towards a holistic Maritime Policy, 14 November - 17 December 2010, Malta
-
The IOI Malta Training course on Regional Ocean Governance for 2010 is taking place from 14 November - 17 December, in Malta. The theme of the course draws upon the conduct of maritime affairs in line with the Lisbon Strategy, targeting the Millennium Development Goals and building upon a holistic and integrated maritime policy following the principles enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. It focuses on the linkages between natural, social and economic sciences and the development of sustainable ocean governance. Applicants should register their interest in the course by submitting the online Preliminary Interest Form (http://www.capemalta.net). Applicants are subsequently requested to send full details in an application form (including the Participant Nomination and Medical Form). The preliminary and full application forms can be accessed from http://www.capemalta.net or by writing to the Course Coordinator, Ms. Antonella Vassallo on ioimaltacourse@capemalta.net. There is also support to provide bursaries to the right candidates, and participants that can sustain in part the cost of their participation such as by covering air travel costs will also be considered. The deadline for applications is 14 September 2010.

Getting Fresh: Will a Warming Climate Disrupt the Gulf Stream and Other Essential Ocean Currents?
-
If the melting of the polar ice caps injects great amounts of freshwater into the world's oceans, climate scientists fear that the influx could affect currents enough to drastically change the weather on land.

Rising ocean temperatures near worst-case predictions
-
The ocean is warming about 50 per cent faster than reported two years ago, according to an update of the latest climate science. A report compiling research presented at a science congress in Copenhagen in March says recent observations are near the worst-case predictions of the 2007 report by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. To read more of this article please see http://www.theage.com. Additionally, the synthesis report from the climate congress in Copenhagen can be found at http://climatecongress.ku.dk

The White Paper: Plans to prepare Europe for climate change
-
Recent research suggests that climate change will strike harder and faster than originally thought, and while developing countries may be the hardest hit, Europe will not escape unscathed. Thus, the European commission is now proposing that EU member countries start to think about how to adapt to climate change.
The European Commission recently presented a policy paper known as the White Paper which presents the framework for adaptation measures and policies to reduce the European Union's vulnerability to the impacts of climate change. The proposal recommends studies to increase understanding of climate change. It also calls for strategies to manage resources better, an assessment of the costs and benefits of adapting to climate change and reliable tools to monitor how the changing environment affects health. To read or download the White Paper please see http://ec.europa.eu

Impacts of Europe's changing climate: 2008 indicator-based assessment report
-
This report, published in September 2009, presents past and projected climate change and impacts in Europe by means of about 40 indicators and identifies sectors and regions most vulnerable with a high need for adaptation. The report covers the several indicator categories, including atmosphere and climate, cryosphere, marine biodiversity and ecosystems, water quantity and freshwater qualit among others. The report also shows the need for adaptation actions at EU, national and regional level. The report is a joint effort of the European Environment Agency (EEA), the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC-IES) and the World Health Organisation Europe (WHO).
