Yes, they do! Zooplankton live in all water environments, from deep oceans to high mountain lakes,
including the rivers. These small animals live in all seas and oceans on the Earth. They are more
abundant in the upper 200 m and are very few in deep waters.
In a cubic meter of sea water from the open Mediterranean, in the upper 50 m, from hundreds to thousands zooplankters occur, whereas below 4000 m only a few individuals live (less than 5!).
Zooplankton are more abundant in the upper layers because they fund more abundant food there, which is mostly represented by phytoplankton and protozoan ciliates.
